Enneagram 8: The Challenger

"Eights don't actually want to be in charge of you, but they don't want you to be in charge of them."
-Suzanne Stabile

Brief Overview

  • Eights are the justice warriors, the challengers, and the protectors of the weak.
  • Because Eights fear betrayal deep down, they have a difficult time feeling and expressing emotions that might make them vulnerable.
  • There's a risk in connecting with others, but once an Eight does, they will be in it for good.
  • Eights are great at protecting the weak and looking out for the underdog, but they want close relationships to feel more equal.
  • They will challenge people and ideas to see what will continue to stand.

In Relationship

  • Eights lead with action and doing.
  • They avoid vulnerability as a form of self-protection.
  • Deep down, eights want connection but avoid being emotionally exposed.
  • Eights challenge ideas to see what will stand, and they push on people to see who will stick around.
  • They protect those they love fiercely.
  • Eights are energized by confrontation, particularly when it's an issue of justice, as they will always fight for justice and fairness, particularly for the weak and vulnerable.

Aggressive Stance

Stances are formed by which of the centers of intelligence is repressed. For Eights, it is feeling.
Eights don't think they are feeling-repressed because they access emotions like anger and passion very easily. These emotions energize them. But Eights have a more difficult time accessing tender emotions because that would make them feel exposed or too vulnerable. Their love displays as passion; their compassion displays as warring for righteousness.
